Home Cooked Food

To me, there is nothing better than the satisfaction you get from cooking and eating your own dinner.  Cavemen did the same thing thousands of years ago, and it still rings true to modern man.

One of the big reasons home cooked food is better than restaurant food is that when you make food yourself, you know exactly what ingredients are going into it.  The biggest difference between home cooked food and restaurant merchandise is the quality of the cooking fat.  The quality of the cooking fat can make or break the healthiness of a meal.

In restaurants, they use cheap fats and vegetable oils in order to maximize profit margins.  You can practically smell the soybean oil when you walk into a typical Chinese restaurant.  And who knows what they use in a diner or fast food joint.  Really, capitalism ruins everyone’s day.

The best cooking fats to use at home include ghee or butter, olive oil, coconut oil, and there are other lesser known oils that go rancid very quickly.  Refined vegetable oil is crap and a big influence in many diseases.

The reason we like fatty foods is because fat is sweet and contains the most amount of calories per gram.  A successful hunter or shepard naturally wanted the food with the most nutritional and caloric density, because in olden times food was scarce and people weren’t confused about what to get at the grocery store.

But back to home cooked food.  Not only can you use a higher quality cooking fat when you prepare your own food, but you can use higher quality ingredients, or even give or take layers of preparation.  Frozen vegetables and canned beans are a big time saver.

In the end, cooking quality food may be no cheaper than buying shoddy restaurant food, but the non fiscal advantages are a distinct improvement.  When you cook and eat better, you get the satisfaction of preparing your own food.  Also, you eat healthier food, which when repeated over and over again, will save your health and save you money on medical bills as you get older.   Another example is that you set a good example for your offspring, who will take on the eating habits of their parents which they’ve learned in youth.

The disadvantages are that it takes time and effort to cook, but really, is anything worthwhile easy?  Once you empower yourself with knowledge of nutrition and cooking, and you have the right tools of the trade, I see no reason why not to prepare your own food.  That restaurant/diner/deli/fast food stuff is poison and it’s only benefit is that buying ready made food is convenient.

So ultimately, you can choose between health, satisfaction, and doing the right thing, or convenience and cost.

Real Food

What’s the real justification for eating meat, or for eating anything in general?  Religion, Science, and Reality.  Man is the apex of evolution and creation and every plant and animal is for our use.

I know animals are cute and compassionate, and no one in their right mind wants to kill one.  But man was created to be steward of the land, and some animals are for food, while others are for pets, others are for work, and still others are best left alone.

Veganism is for hippies and I don’t imagine the world becoming vegan.  It’s just not possible.  The reality is, the world produces enough food to feed 10 billion people, yet there are only 7 billion people on earth.  And still, over a billion people are hungry around the world.  This is all because of political corruption and the mal-distribution of wealth.

The ketogenic, or, low carb high fat diet is best.  There are essential amino acids, essential fatty acids, but no essential sugars.  The human being can adapt to glucose or ketones depending on the situation.  It’s only in these artificial times with artificial agriculture, business, politics, and media that starch is abundant and the evil capitalist at the grocery store charges you too much for every type of protein food.

Fish, Seafood, Eggs, Butter, Green Vegetables, Yogurt, are some of the best foods.  Eating all the grain, sugar, and fruit you want is a recipe for disaster, and trying to be vegan has caused me to gain weight not lose weight.  Don’t believe anything until you’ve experienced it for yourself.  What’s good for the goose is good for the gander.

But the whole ketogenic vs vegan debacle comes down to a larger issue.  And it touches on the meaning of life and the nature of our times.  If killing animals is perfectly natural and right, and so is warfare and self defense, then nonviolence is just a philosophical idea, and violence is part of the human experience.  This leads me to believe that we are not living in paradise conditions, which should seem obvious to anyone.

If you don’t believe in God or morality, then rock on with yo bad self.  But I believe in the Creator, and that he doesn’t want us to live in these barbaric times.  This leads me to wonder if judeochristianity is right and there was a Golden Age when man lived in harmony with the animals and ate only fruit and seed, and that there will be a return to Grace someday.

This shows you how through moral reasoning and faith, there is some merit to judeochristianity.  It says in the second book of Enoch, a book not included in the official bible, that in the restored paradise, humans will only eat fruit that resemble dates that provide complete human nutrition.  Once the messiah comes, there will be no more need for killing, warring, and fighting.  That is a great hope.

Real food is food that sustains and nourishes life.  Most people today don’t just eat to support life, but to calm down and lower anxiety and indulge in pleasure or feel loved.  This is very unhealthy.  Food is fuel, and one must adapt to live off of what is best for you in this current situation.  If you have a choice, live off of ketones not glucose, thats the way people lived before the advent of agriculture.

It doesn’t matter if you are Jew or Christian, we weren’t supposed to live in these evil times, and without a hope in the resurrection there seems to be no mercy.  There’s no justice in the real world, and since I don’t want to die, the most I can hope for is to survive doing what needs to be done.

Worst of the Worst

There’s a lot of bad, unhealthy, low-quality foods out there.  There’s hydrogenated fat, there’s high fructose corn syrup.  There’s refined wheat flour.  The list can be quite long depending on your beliefs about nutrition.

But one of the worst foods for you is dairy products.  Of course, everyone likes creamy, milky, sweet, bland food.  But I’ve been hearing the anti-dairy facts since 1998, when I began studying Traditional Chinese Medicine.  And the facts are clear.

Dairy products are the worst foods out there.  Milk, Cheese, Cream, Ice Cream, etc… are all mucous-forming and yin-tonics in a yin-heavy world.  There are dairy products that aren’t that bad, like plain yogurt and clarified butter, but even they aren’t good for everyone.  There’s a lot of merit in going dairy-free.

The alternatives are so much better for you.  That includes rice milk, coconut milk, and almond milk.  There’s no question that the milk of a different species should not be consumed, especially after weening off your mother’s milk in infancy.  People who drink cow’s milk are the minority around the world, not the majority.

There are other things one should avoid in dieting.  Things like excessive sugar, which is acidifying, and also gluten, which brings with it a lot of toxicity.  Even starch can be bad, depending on what food you eat.  But dairy is all the way junk and should not be seen as essential to the human diet.  Because it isn’t.

And this goes without mentioning farmed meat, everything from beef to lamb to chicken to whatever barnyard animal you slaughter.  There was a time when people lived on family farms and slaughtered their own animals.  These were active people who lived on the land and healthy animals that lived somewhat normal lives.

There’s so much toxic food out there, and it’s easy to make bad decisions.  But one basic decision that can influence your life for the better is to go dairy-free.  Find substitutes in your cooking that taste similar, and you will get acclimated to the substitutes and not cow udder secretions.  Almond milk is good in coffee.  Tofu is good in stir-fry.  Tempeh makes a good meat substitute.  And coconut milk is good in curries and smoothies.

You’ll be better off if you go dairy-free.  So do it.  Even if you indulge in cheese or ice cream once in a while after going dairy-free, your taste buds will change eventually and you will notice what dairy really is.  The baby-food of a bovine, not essential nutrition of an adult human.

On Ethics

Veganism is not for everyone.  This should seem obvious.  While animals do have sentience, all of them do, we simply can’t avoid killing in order to continue our own existence.  That is the nature of life on earth, it is kill or be killed.

People need high protein diets to function optimally.  The low carb, high fat diet has been proven effective for weight loss and health goals, and there’s no way around it.  We started out frugivores but became omnivores.  The best diet is one of lean, low salt protein and low starch vegetables.  That is how athletes and bodybuilders get in shape, abs are made in the kitchen.

It seems that the western man overdoes everything.  Instead of increasing the lifespan and quality of life of all people, the industrial revolution just increased disparity between people in the affluent countries and the poor countries.  Factory farms are heinous exploitation of the natural world and of sentient creatures.  This is a cause everyone should fight for, since everyone eats.

As an ordinary human being, one can say, this doesn’t affect me, I can just go on doing whatever I do.  But it does affect you, and you vote all day with the way you spend your money.

The native americans could live on the land and hunt their own food without depleting the environment.  They understood animals have souls and feelings too.  They still needed protein and vegetables to live a full life.  They honored the spirit of the animals and acknowledged their importance in the ecosystem.  Why is western man so callous?

Capitalism really appeals to lowest common denominator.  Appealing to man’s lowest most selfish inclinations works, because man is fallen and corrupt.  Europeans have higher standards of food purity because they are more traditional.  Greed is not good.

America is really living high and mighty at the expense of the rest of the world, and poor third world nations are following our lead.  It seems like this is all one con artist’s scheme to depopulate the human race.  There has to be a moral consciousness if anything is going to change.  We shouldn’t let the top 1% win and live like a leech of our suffering hides.  Educate the masses, especially the young, and there will be less people suffering and dying young.  Life seems to be problematic to begin with, let’s not make it worse.

If people demanded higher food quality, they’d get it, because merchants want to do whats best for business.  If people really stood up for the rights of animals, they’d be treated better.  It’s unsettling that primitive aborigines could live without ruining their environment but the american man can’t.  It starts with education, and I feel people should care more about health (of themselves and their planet) and less about profit margins.

Street-Corner Blues

I only know long island, because that is where I live and I don’t travel much.  But walk down any main road in new york, and you will see a 711, a dunkin donuts, and/or a starbucks.  Someone is selling cheap dairy, sugar, and grain, and someone is consuming it with glee and someone is profiting off of this exchange.

Don’t blame the Pakistani guy at the counter of the 711.  Don’t blame the truckdrivers for needing a cup of strong coffee to stay awake at the wheel.  And don’t blame the young men and women who work at Starbucks.  They’re not that rich, and they’re just facilitating you ruining your own health.  It’s a neutral act, not an evil act.

It’s really business, media, and politics to blame.  Some people are profiting off your ignorance and misery.  They want you to keep eating junk and keep getting sick and keep going to the medical doctor to get pharmaceuticals, which in turn makes you more hungry, tired, and obese.  This system is rigged.

In fact, all of this society is designed to defeat you, the good simple man.  It’s designed to drain you slow, to rob you, to beat you down.  And the only cure is to work hard every day, spend less than you earn, and not be so materialistic.  Less is more.  Money is the root of all evil.  If you are not content to be on a fixed income, get an education and find a line of work you enjoy.  Work isn’t work if you enjoy it.

Holy men and yogis leave the world of men because it is so evil and worthless.  But rather than being a monk on the mountain chanting ‘hare krishna’, it is better to be in the world but not of it.  I don’t want to be a celibate monk living off of alms.

I want to work and marry, because power and pleasure feels good.  And joy is the meaning of life.  It’s that simple.

Parting Thoughts

My annual subscription to wordpress runs out in two weeks and I decided not to pay to extend the use of the domain name.  I’m sure my blog will still be on the internet, under a longer, more unwieldy handle.

I’ve learned a lot over the past year of publishing this blog.  It’s not all bad.  No matter who you are, high or low, it’s possible to change your situation.  Keep trying, and you will find a sympathetic audience.

It is no longer necessary for me to work for free.  I don’t want to blog away my ideas to the public for free.  I deserve better.  I am quitting facebook and blogging.  I don’t want to spend more time than necessary infront of the computer.  If i’m not working a volunteer job, internship, or work from home job, or even jotting down notes, there’s no point in sitting infront of a computer all day.

My suggestion to you, gentle reader, is to never quit no matter how bad it gets.  As long as you got the breath of life in you, you have a chance to improve your position and make a difference in somebody else’s life.  Don’t listen to the critics.

And whatever you do, don’t assimilate to mainstream society.  Be in the world but not of it.  There are people in this world who profit off your ignorance and misery.  What I tried to do with this blog was educate ordinary people about the way to get healthy so you don’t have to rely on the junk food industry and the medical establishment.  They mean you no good.  Life is a battle, and to be victorious in life, you must be in the camp of God. He grants victory.

What I Learned In Acupuncture School…

I learned a lot, because I was actually paying attention and had my full mental faculties about me.  The major thing is that the American people are sick and dying largely because of ignorance of the basics.

People in other countries don’t need a nutrition lesson, because they eat a lot of fiber and walk more than we do.  They have to.  Grain and vegetables is easier to procure and requires less resources than meat and milk, so these poor people eat more fiber and don’t eat as often as we do.  They also have to hustle to make ends meet, there’s no welfare nation in other countries, so they get more movement in during the course of the day.

While socialism is basic human civility, and medicine and education should be given to every citizen free of charge, America is a capitalist society, where all actions are motivated by self interest and the government and media appeals to this inclination in man’s nature.

Joseph Goebbels, the master of propaganda for the Nazi Party once said, ‘think of the media as a keyboard, on which the government can play.’  That is exactly what has happened to America, a nation led by capitalism and competition.  People, even educated people, are largely ignorant of what people are supposed to eat.

The food industry is focused on profit, not health, and thus advertises its junk food on tv and other media.  Not only that, but commercial food has become a type of merchandise, altered in both taste and appearance to be addictive to the consumer.  Add on top of the fictional ideas that people need more than 100g a protein a day or should avoid cholesterol completely, and you have a recipe for disaster.

The main food should be whole grains and vegetables, cooked over low heat for a long time.  It doesn’t matter where you get your protein, most people are getting too much, and the food manufacturers put sugar in everything not only to make it taste better, but to make you addicted to the food.

Meat and milk should not be daily food, it should be a rarity, and in the past it was.  It is only with the progress in agricultural technology in the 1950’s that the beef and dairy industries began confusing the common people with propaganda.

So in essence, ignorance of children’s knowledge has made the American people the most miserable of all, and people are actually digging their own graves without basic tools to live.

Starchy Foods: Good or Bad?

I’ve really meditated on this question, and came to the same conclusion I read in a basic nutrition book years ago.  Starchy foods are the cure for obesity, not the cause.  Yes, refined sugars and starches are fattening and unhealthy, but then again, you could theoretically get fat and sick from eating too many peanuts too.

Starchy staples like rice, corn, potatoes, quinoa, beans, sweet potato, etc… are actually the best foods, and there’s no need to eliminate them from your diet.

Processed carbohydrates are one dietary evil, but then again so is meat and milk.  I mean, it’s not evil to consume animal food, but it is taxing on the environment and everyone (including your) wallet.  It makes more sense to be as plant based as possible.

I like certain ‘luxury’ foods like sushi and anchovies and eggs, and it will be a long time before I give them up completely, but really veganism is the wave of the future and I suggest you ride this wave.

The Deal With Dairy

Most dairy products are terrible foods that are awful for your health.  When I was in Chinese Medicine school, the one thing they kept harping on was dairy is unnatural and bad for you.

Eating dairy on a regular, lifetime basis actually shortens your life and weakens your bones.  That being said, there are exceptions and limitations to this statement.

Butter is the best dairy product because it contains no milk sugar (lactose) which is not amiable to most people’s digestive system, and no milk protein, which is highly allergenic and the root cause of many autoimmune diseases.

Butter or Ghee are ideal cooking fats, so don’t throw away all dairy products.  But remember, buying dairy directly feeds the veal calf industry.  Young calves are ripped away from their mothers when they are still babes, a terribly traumatic act.  The mother becomes a milk cow and the baby becomes you’re next order of veal after a torturous existence.

Cheese and Yogurt is healthier than milk, but even these foods should be seen as drugs, not foods, and should be used in moderation, not on a daily basis.  Believe me, this insight is a lifesaver.

So my suggestion to you is to get off the cow’s udder and get protein and calcium from other sources.

The Modern Day Food Dilemma

Let’s face it, most restaurant food in America is not good.  Everything from 711, Dunkin Donuts, and fast food to even formal eateries are lacking.  That is one reason people are in such poor health and succumbing to chronic disease.

However, preparing all your own meals is quite problematic in the real world.  And that is even if you bulk prepare food on the weekend and store it in containers.  The health industry pays no attention to food, and the food industry pays no attention to health.  However, Hippocrates, the father of western medicine thought things should not be that way.  He said, ‘let your medicine be thy food and your food be thy medicine.’  Obviously, something has been lost.

If you are working full time it’s hard to eat right and get enough exercise.  If you work from home, you have more time and more flexibility in preparing your own meals and exercising.

Remember, the restaurant business uses low quality ingredients in order to maximize profit margins, or the difference between what it costs to prepare the product and how much the businessman gets in the end of the line.  Still, time is money and you pay for convenience.

I suggest making nutrition your hobby, since everyone eats and it is a vital subject.  Spend some time reading about nutrition and learning how to cook.  And then set aside some time every day or every week to cook in advance.  You don’t want to go to the grocery store too often, nor do you want to be dependent on restaurants.  The stuff they sell you is merchandise, and often, it’s designed to make you addicted to the product.

There are people in this country who are profiting off your ignorance of nutrition, just like on the flip side, buying the right products in the right places motivates the economy to change favorably.  You vote with your dollar bill.

All this diet and exercise information takes some discipline to apply, but that is the cost of doing the right thing, life isn’t a constant party.
