Native Fitness Facilities:
KNOW THESE 3 METRICS!

I absolutely love what I do! Traveling across Indian Country has to be the most rewarding thing I have ever done in 29 years of business – our people are exceptional!

It is apparent from my travels and in-house research that Native Fitness Facilities need help defining essential metrics for success. Less than 10% track what I determine to be essential data, and of those 10% about 95% do nothing with the data they do have. It’s not the fault of those running the facilities, there is no training manual or “how to” on Native Fitness Facilities – at least not yet!

In the private sector we know just about everything there is to know about our members such as age, gender, usage, time of day, days of the week, busiest months, etc. But more importantly, we use this data to optimize scheduling, ensure sufficient staff, equipment availability, and identify -patterns, peak hours, and popular activities. We know whether we are operating efficiently by the deposits into our bank accounts.

If we are going to really improve the health disparities across Indian Country, we need to start with essential Metrics in the Fitness Facilities we do have. It’s typically not about more money, but rather maximizing what we have through understanding and operations.

Start tracking these 3 foundational metrics for your facility now:

AGE

Know the age of who is using the facility. Although there has been a huge advancement in the promotion of utilizing free weights for fitness, there still exists a clear separation between age segments across most populations. You can learn a ton by focusing on who is not using the facility, which can help identify potential equipment gaps for certain market segments as an example.

GENDER

This is just as critical as age in determining who is using and who is NOT using the facility. Believe it or not, Men and Women operate on two different wavelengths even in the gym environment. This information becomes invaluable in determining how we move forward to increase usage amongst our entire community.

USAGE

As of right now this is your key success metric that you need to monitor daily, weekly, monthly, and annually. This number provides justification for facility size, staffing, allocation of funds and many other administrative functions that cannot be justified any other way. We are not going to go out and body fat test our communities one by one, but we can actively watch the number of workouts and monitor if they are rising or falling. This is the ideal place to start to know if our efforts are having the effect we are seeking.
What gets measured gets improved! I know without a doubt that only good things will happen as we start to put effort towards truly understanding the facilities we do have by diving into essential metrics. The amount of learning that can take place will be eye opening and will provide a platform for long term results which equals the ultimate goal of long term change.
